Life With BIG AL

Life With BIG AL (Early Alzheimer's) a Caregivers Diary

By Judy Seegmiller

Life With BIG AL is a story about how one family copes having their husband, father, and grandfather diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 52. It is a story of struggle, faith, laughter, sadness, joy, and above all, much love. Craig was a bright, energetic, very athletic individual who had always taken perfect care of his body. He ran 10-15 miles per day, ran a small retail specialty store by himself, and took care of his wife recovering from cancer and kidney failure. It was because of all the things he did that no one paid too much attention when he did something out of the ordinary; he had so much stress in his life. It wasn’t until his wife, Judy, got well and studied that she knew. And, life With BIG AL began…

What People Are Saying

  • "Life with Big Al’ has been the best book I have read to date on this subject, and I think I have read them all . . . In no other book or reference was I able to find such truth. I cried throughout most of the book … I was amazed at the similarities of our experiences. . . I feel like I have known Judy for years after reading the book.”

    Deb Carey Caregiver
  • "Craig was the youngest person we had at The Alzheimer’s Center. What I will always remember about Craig is his great love for Judy. He knew, to the end, who Judy was and that he was doing “good” if Juqy was around. Her endless labor of love for Craig was an inspiration to all of us. What a tragedy to see someone in the prime of their existence to be struck with such a devastating disease. I hope that other caregivers will find reassurance that there are others out there like them through this book."

Marcia Lindelien Director, The Alzheimer’s Center
  • "As an Adult Protective Service worker, I do investigations on referrals of caregivers that are abusive, and neglectful towards their loved ones, or person(s) they are caring for with a disability. I have witnessed agonizing effects, and the results of physical abuse and validated the indignity of emotional and verbal abuse that has offended and shamed the disabled by their caregiver. I was astounded by the paramount of strength Judy demonstrated not only mental and physical but spiritual to preserve her husband's love and dignity throughout his devastating and deteriorating diseased course ef Alzheimer's. Judy's diary, Life with Big Al, will be a tool for other caregivers to assist them in learning skills through her experiences. Judy's diary teaches other families how they can pull together and alter their lifestyle in a positive manner by giving the disabled and the family a quality life during the deteriorating stages of the disease. Thank you Judy for writing your journal and sharing your experiences and knowledge that will inspire caregivers as they tread the difficult path of taking care of a loved one that has fallen victim to Alzheimer's and/or other forms of dementia."

    Susan Orton Adult Protective Services
  • "As an Emergency room physician, I have seen many patients with Alzheimer's Disease. Not until I read Judy and Craig's diary, Life with Big Al did I more fully understand the burden it places on the caregivers. No one I know was more full of life, fun, and enthusiasm than Craig. This is a story of love and tragedy. It was very hard for me to read. However, if you have a tough trail to hike in life this is the map you need to prepare for it. "

    Keith R. Hooker M.D.
  • "Our friend, Judy Seegmiller, takes us on a painful and realistic journey through the devastating stages of Alzheimer’s. Judy triumphantly emerges with hope and promise stemming from her overwhelming faith and great love. "
